The application of organized knowledge and skills in the form of devices, medicines, vaccines, procedures and systems developed to solve a health problem and improve quality of life. What is a medical device? An article, instrument, apparatus or machine that is used in the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of illness or disease or for detecting, measuring, correcting the structure or function of the body for some health purpose. Its purpose is not achieved by pharmacological, immunological or metabolic means. What is a medical equipment? Medical devices requiring calibration, maintenance, repair, user training and decommissioning. It’s used for the specific purposes of diagnosis and treatment of disease or rehabilitation following disease or injury. It excludes implantable, disposable or single-use medical devices. What is HTA? Systematic evaluation of properties, effects, and impacts of a health-care technology. It is conducted by interdisciplinary groups using explicit analytical frameworks drawing from a variety of methods. It may address the direct and indirect consequences of technologies. Its main purpose is to inform technology- related policy-making in health care, by evaluating the safety, efficacy and effectiveness of the technology weighed against its impact on the society.
