1 MEDICAL INFORMATICS ANNO 2016-2017 PARTE FERRANTE 2 0. BA SI C CONCEP TS I N M EDI CA L I NFORM A TI CS OUTL I N E:  THE MODEL  THE INFORMATION  THE SYSTEM  THE INFORMATION SYSTEMS Medical information is built on these concepts. TH E MODEL The model is a very simple rempresentation of the real system. We have to model the real world, thanks to abstraction. Create a model of a patology or air pressure for example. Model is a cop y of the world, and it is always less detailed than the system to be modeled. We have to know why we need a model, what is our goal. We are creating a distortion of the reality, and the number of possibile models is inifinite. Before starting modeling, we have to know the reason why the model is needed. Second definition of the model, that can be seen not only as a copy, but also as a temp late. This represents step one towards the creation of something functional. We are maybe constructing an artifcat functional to construct the real one. In this particular case , the initial functionalitiess affects the final result. I can create a circle, with different steps, connecting this two definitions of model : TH E I N FOR MATI ON Difference between data, information and knowledge ? These are the most used words to define what we know about the world. But we have a sort of gerarchy of meaning. We can have a lot of data, but data, alone, doesn’t mean anything.Datum becomes information only when we know to what it is referred. It becomes knowledge when we have some rules, and when we can then introduce a model. 3 i can interpret a datum, and, when i do it, it becomes an information. Numbers are a d ata, number in a context is an in formation . And in the end, the context is supplied by our kn ow ledg e of the world Knowledge can also be inferred…
