SECTION 1 Defining Operations and Manufacturing Operations enclose everything that physically happens within a supply chain, including transportation, warehousing, manufacturing, assembly, and packaging. The terms manufacturing and production are typically used synonymously as subcategories of operations. Our primary definition of production is the processes and methods used to transform inputs (all the raw materials and parts, such as door handles, steel, or wheels) into outputs (the final product, whether it is a car, a smartphone, or a t-shirt). Operations Management is the term that describe everything that physically happens within a company to provide value to the customer. Crucially, this applies not only to physical manufacturing (like producing cars) but also to service operations. For example, mobile network providers like TIM, Vodafone, or Wind are service operations. Ensuring that cell towers function, networks remain stable, and technicians are dispatched for repairs are all core operations management tasks. Operations Management in Corporate and Service Contexts In a corporate context, such as at Ferrari, the company is structured with shareholders, a board of directors, and general managers overseeing various functional departments like finance, sales, and marketing. While Research and Development (R&D) engineers design the product (representing roughly 5% to 15% of the workforce), operations managers are responsible for physically producing it. The company operates like an orchestra, and operations management is a critical component ensuring the product is actually built.
