Biomateriali 2021 Parte 1 - Prof. Paola Petrini Giuseppe Lauricella 1 Biomaterials and hard tissues The design of biomaterials for hard tissues have dierent mechanical properties, that must be considered according to the speci c application. Please Note! The general concept of "adequate mechanical properties" and "biocompatible material must be avoided, since it is meaningless if not properly contextualized. As explained in the article " There is no such a thing as a biocompatible material" , by David F. Williams, the concept of biocompatibility does not really exists. The article can be consulted here! The biocompatibility lies between a given device and the body compartment where it is applied. A given material can be compatible in dierent ways, and the reaction of the human body will be dierent, whether is has been implanted in the bone, in the muscular tissue and so on. NOTE = Precision is key! Chronic in ammatory response may take place in one tissue, while not in an another one. Degradation times may be suitable for a given application . The same precision should be adopted when referring to mechanical properties. Make sure to tap into the vast pool of detailed words and concept related to the properties of a material: stiness, strength, toughness, abrasion, fatigue and corrosion resistance ... . Specify which mechanical propery is relevant in which application Biocompatibility and adequacy of mechanical properties are NOT intrinsic to a single biomaterial but they are DEPENDENT on the situation!
