17/09 ACCOUNTING, FINANCE & CONTROL In many companies, the activities related to accounting, finance and control are grouped together in a dedicated organisational unit. This unit is often called Administration, Finance and Control (A,F&C), although in practice it is sometimes referred to simply as the Finance department. The person who leads this unit is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), one of the most important executives in the company. The CFO has direct responsibility over how financial resources are managed and reported, and plays a central role in the company’s success. The CFO Role The Chief Financial Officer is the executive responsible for the financial strategy and day-to-day financial operations of the business. The CFO reports directly to the CEO, which highlights the importance of this role within the organisation. The CFO’s influence extends across key areas such as investments, the company’s capital structure, liquidity and money management, as well as the definition and support of long-term business strategies. The duties of the CFO are broad. They include financial planning, risk management, monitoring cash flow and expenditures, and dealing with taxation issues and related risks. The CFO also develops and enforces financial and accounting policies that ensure compliance with legal and internal standards. Another crucial responsibility is management accounting and control, which involves measuring and analysing performance. Finally, the CFO is in charge of preparing and presenting financial reports for the board of directors and actively contributing to the strategic direction of the company. The Three Main Areas 1.
