SECTION 1 1. What is the definition of "Supply Chain Management (SCM)"? We define the supply chain as all the organizations and companies working together to produce a certain product and deliver it to the end customer. Supply Chain Management involves the integrated planning of material, service, and financial flows. It spans the entire process, starting from the extraction of raw materials (for example, mining iron ore to produce steel) all the way to the delivery of the final product to the end customer (such as a consumer purchasing a car). 2. What are the goals of Supply Chain Management (SCM)? The primary objective is to optimize the material, service, and financial flows. This requires enabling collaboration among the various global entities and actors across the supply chain to minimize transportation costs, making the entire system efficient, competitive, and customer-oriented. This is achieved through: • Lowering costs. • Increasing product availability. • Providing faster logistics, such as modern "flash delivery" services that bring groceries to your home in under two hours. 3. Describe the Bullwhip Effect and how this led to the development of SCM. The Bullwhip Effect describes how minor fluctuations in consumer demand downstream cause progressively larger and more erratic fluctuations in order volumes upstream. This happens due to human psychology: no supply chain manager wants to experience a stockout, leading them to artificially inflate their safety buffers at every tier. The implementation of SCM is the response to this problem: it advocates for high transparency and information sharing across the supply chain, representing the primary defense against the Bullwhip Effect. 4.
