OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT EXAM Prof. Alberto Portioli Staudacher, Prof. Matteo Rossini December 19th, 2024 Queue-Yield Exercise (9 Points) The BBH airport is a small airport that operates international flights on a daily basis. On average, the airport receives 180 passengers per hour, who then take different flights to different destinations. The airport is composed of four stages: check-in, security, passport control, and boarding. All passengers arrive first at the check-in stage where they present their passports and weigh their checked-in baggages to get their boarding pass. The check-in stage is formed by five queues with one agent serving each queue. 5% of the passengers have problems with their visas and so they do not get their boarding pass and leave the airport. The remaining passengers do not have any problems with their visas and so they get their boarding pass then move to the security stage. The security stage is formed by three queues with one security officer serving each queue. At the security stage, passengers walk through a metal detector scanner that checks if a person is carrying any metals. 30% of passe ngers that arrive from the check-in stage to the security stage fail the scanning test and so they must remove the metals they have then re-join the queue again for a second check. After the second check, they always pass the test and can move to the next stage. After the security stage, passengers go to the passport control stage, where they get their passport, documents, and records checked by the police. The passport control stage is formed by a single queue with four police officers. 3% of passengers who go through passport control have problems with their documents or records where they are not allowed to travel and so they leave the airport.
