Politecnico di Milano Course of Biomachines (with Laboratory) Surname______________ Name______________ ID nr._________ Mark: __/30 Exercise 1 (7 points) Describe what determines the outlet pressure of either a volumetric or a centrifugal pump during extracorporeal circulation procedures. Exercise 2 (8 points) Determine the length of the tube to allow a blood transfusion with a flow rate of 300 ml/min (Fig. 1). The fluid pressure at the inlets of tube, that is required to guarantee the desired flow rate, it is equal to 500 mmHg. The venous pressure is 3 mmHg. The circuit is made by a blood bag, a tube having internal diameter of 1/16” and a dialysis needle having internal diameter Di = 1.2 mm and length L = 40 mm. Disregard the pressure drops due to the sharp variations at the junction between the blood bag and the tube and between the tube and the needle. Consider blood viscosity µ = 3 cP and density ρ = 1060 kg/m3. Calculate if the potentially most haemolytic part of the circuit Fig. 1 Blood transfusion induces haemolysis. Exercise 3 (5 points) 1 l/min blood flow rate at a temperature of 19°C, unknown haematocrit and with specific oxygen content of 14 mlO2/dlb, is mixed with 2 l/min arterial blood flow rate with physiological O2 content. Determine the value of the unknown haematocrit to have pO2 = 35 mmHg in the blood mixture. Exercise 4 (10 points) Determine and comment on the blood conditions at the outlet of two different oxygenation circuits assembled by using identical membrane blood oxygenators characterised by the same specific oxygen
transfer curve and supplied with pure oxygen flow rate at the gas side. 6 5 𝑣 02 [ml02/dlb] 4 3 2 1 0 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 Qb [l/min] Both circuits are supplied with a blood flow rate Qb = 5 l/min in standard venous conditions. Circuit A: the oxygenators are put in parallel, with equal blood flow rate flowing through each one of them. Qb1 OXY 1 Qb pO2=? OXY 2 Qb2 Circuit B: oxygenators OXY 1 and OXY 2 are put in series. Qb pO2=? OXY 1 OXY 2
