INTRODUZIONE Manufacturing systems can be classified following three different axis, that are strictly linked each other → a change in the manufacturing system can be seen both as a constraint and as an opportunity because if I change it, I will be able to satisfy the different needs I terms of volume/demand. The PROCESS axis describes how the production is done Manufacturing plants → in this kind of industry, the final product can be disassembled in the original raw materials. Basically it is possible to have both assembly and parts production ( these parts will be the new raw material for the assembly process) Process plants → it is not possible to distinguish the raw materials in the final product: this may be due to a physical-chemical transformation of the raw materials. In this kind of industry it is done only the part production, that may be an input for a manufacturing plant. The DEMAND axis describes how the company fulfills the demand from the market. It is possible to have: • Production To Stock ( so there is a warehouse where the final product is stocked) • Production To Order, where the production is based on the order of the client. It could be a single order that I do not expect to produce anymore in the future like a ship for one client, or a repeating order where the customer decides the product on a catalogue of products that I place on the market. In case of repeating order everything is already engineered, from production to operations because it is a product that I expect to be demanded also in the future The VOLUME axis describes how the production is managed to make the required production volume: • One of a kind production • Batch production → is an intermittent production that implies set up and stock holding costs.
