LECTURE 3 (28/02/2023) – LEADERSHIP 1 Leadership VS Management “Leaders manage and managers lead, but the two activities are not synonymous” (Bernard Bass) We must make a difference between manager and leader. As manager we are aiming to manage almost everything, that is different from being a leader. In the following lines we will discuss in which way a manager is different from a leader, remarking the fact that a good manager doesn’t mean that you are a good leader and vice versa. Introducing the differences, the main one is that a leader is more human oriented, so it’s not important that he has specific skills (a technical background), while a manager must own specific skills. Adjectives for manager (for students) Adjectives for Leader (for students): 1) Analytical 1) Charismatic 2) Efficient 2) Empathetic 3) Organised 3) Motivator 4) Pragmatic 4) Listener 5) Goal-oriented 5) Inspiring MANAGEMENT Management is the discipline that makes the things done through people of the organization. Different scholar gave different definitions (one of them is “A good must have some characteristics such as: planning, organising and controlling”). A manger doesn’t care who he is dealing with if it is a person or a machine, because he has to make the things going on.
