BUILDING ENVELOPE DESIGN 02 Academic Year 2017-2018 Prof. Enrico De Angelis GROUP 13 De Donatis Lorenzo - 876178 Santoianni Genny, Nicole - 884523 Stucchi Simone - 874442 Homework 01 - Climate review EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The report is based on a climatic analysis of the cities of Semipalatinsk (Kazakhstan) and Colombo (Sri Lanka); the two cities show very consistent differences in the temperatures and outside conditions which they are exposed to. The first analysis clearly shows how the dry bulb temperature distribution in Semipalatinsk presents much more discordant values respect to what we have in Colombo: this is due mainly to the highly rigid tem- peratures reached in Kazakhstan during the winter period, not even comparable to the winter season in Colombo that doesn’t almost exist. Solar energy has also been considered in order to try to give an explanation to the high temperature drops discovered in Semipalatinsk: this can be due in fact to the exposition to sun during day-hours while a strong reduction in temperature during the night; none of these behaviours are present instead in Colom- bo, where the solar radiation is not incredibly strong but neither the temperature reaches very low levels during the nights. Strong differences are also highlighted in the analysis of the cooling and heating degree hours/days, that clearly show how the climate of Semipalatinsk requires a number of heating degree days much higher than the ones related to the cooling; this trend is not present in Colombo, where the moderate climate brings the heating period to be almost inexistent.
