SOLAR AND BIOMASS POWER PRODUCTION AY 2020-21 15th June 2021 Prof. Giampaolo Manzolini Time: 40 min Instructions for the examination: 1) Clearly indicate your name on all the sheets you will deliver. 2) The score refers to exercises done in a comprehensive manner with exact numerical results. Numerical results correct but not accompa- nied by explanations will not be taken into account. The final score can be normalized according to the average results. 3) Answer briefly and clearly only to the asked questions. Calculations and explanations which do not respond to the questions will not be considered for evaluation even if correct. 4) Talking with colleagues and / or cheating will cause the cancellation of the exam. 5) All the needed data for the resolution of exercises lies on this paper. It is NOT ALLOWED to use material other than this (e.g. books, clipboard etc.). 6) Not all the provided inputs are necessary for the problem solving Each answer shall fit in one A4 page Question A) PV: Please draw the I-V characteristic of a PV cell at STC, at NOCT conditions and assuming a cell tempera- ture of 0°C and 500 W/m2. Discuss and justify the differences Question B) CSP: Please define the Solar Multiple parameter and Thermal Energy storage size. Discuss the impact of these two parameters in a CSP plant optimization outlining differences between power and energy ap- proaches Question C) Biomass: Discuss the optimal conversion process for a biomass with i) 35% of moisture content, ii) the fol- lowing chemical structure (50% lignin, 30% hemi cellulose and 20% cellulose and iii) Cl and S present in the ultimate analysis. Draw the schematic of the discussed process
