Explain how it is built up and which dimensions does it consider. Finally, mention why HDI is an index consistent with the current paradigm of development associated to the UN’s Agenda 2030. In 2010 the HDI has been defined as the geometric mean of the three-dimension indices: HDI = sqr (LEI*EI*GNIindex). This method captures how well rounded a country’s performance is across three dimensions: health (life expectancy index), education (education index, related to the mean years and expected years of schooling), and living standards (income index, related to the gross national income). The indicators are evaluated for all the country as normalized values: (value – min value) / (max value – min value). Values and the indexes are aggregated with a geometric average. This index pushes beyond the classical economic paradigm since it considers three different dimensions of development . It embeds the concept of sustainable development, which integrates the improvement of human capacities with the economic, environmental, and social dimension of development in line with the paradigm of the Agenda 2030.
