(a) Se 1 e 1′ sono due elementi neutri, allora 1′  1 = 1 ′ (perché 1 è elemento neutro) e 1  1′ = 1 (perché 1′ è elemento neutro), ma 1′  1 = 1  1′ (proprietà commutativa) da cui 1′ = 1. Se y e z sono due opposti di x (cioè x + y = 0 e x + z = 0 ), da (x + y) + z = ( x + z) + y (proprietà associativa e commutativa) segue 0 + z = 0 + y e quindi z = y. Se y e z sono due reciproci di x = 0 (cioè xy = 1 e xz = 1 ), da (xy) z = ( xz) y (proprietà associativa e commutativa) segue 1z = 1y e quindi z = y. (b) Se fosse 1 = 0 , preso x = 0 si avrebbe x = x1 = x0 = 0 , assurdo. (Si dà per provato che x0 = 0 ).
