Researchers are engineering a bioartificial liver to temporarily replace hepatic function in patients with acute liver failure. The new strategy consists in the isolation and expansion of hepatocyte cells, in the form of spherical aggregates. They are seeded on a porous scaffold and then inserted inside a cartridge perfused using the patient plasma.
