Course of Space Structures Modeling of Space Structures Written test, June 15 th, 2022 Exercise 1 Consider the structure in the gure. The rst and the third portions are made of two parallel bars of axial stiness EA1 and EA3, respectively, connected by means of rigid plates; the second portion consists of a bar with axial stiness EA2. Model the structure in the gure by using three nite elements with linear shape functions, solve the problem, and evaluate the strain energy stored in the structure. Then, evaluate the strain energy ob- tained using the Ritz method with one single degree of freedom. Comment the results and discuss how the strain energy obtained with the two methods is expected to behave if more degrees of freedom are used. (Unit for result: N mm) Data L1 = 1000 mm L2 = 2L1 L3 = L1 EA1 = 1.0 × 106 N EA2 = 2EA1 EA3 = 3EA1 P = 8000 N
