Vernacular Architecture The term ‘vernacular’ is derived from the Latin vernaculus, meaning "domestic, native, indigenous"; from verna, meaning "native slave". In ancient times, native people, in the absence of modern energy production methods, had to use the passive behavior of buildings as much as possible to achieve their needs. With the term ‘vernacular architecture’, in fact, we can identify an architectural style that reflects local traditions, that is designed based on local needs and availability of construction materials. This type of architecture is obviously reflecting very different kinds of buildings spread among the high disomogeneity of the word we’re living into; occidental houses, for example, will give such an high importance to internal lighting that we will not find in Asian buildings: this is related to the different way in which residential building are used and lived in different cultures. 2. Watson and Labs matrix: Design Strategies In their book (1973) about climatic responsive applications, Watson and Labs created an original matrix that is able to explain the different design strategies that could be used in different situations and climates; much attention in the matrix is given to the heat sinks and sources.
