1 Possible Q&A Logistics EXAM SIMULATION 2020 What are the main approaches to supply chain strategy according to Lee’s Model? How can these approaches be related to the main variables describing the external context? Pick one of the examples/seminars we have seen in class and apply the model According to the Lee’s Model we have 4 main approaches to supply chain strategy: - Lean (effective) Supply Chain - Responsive Supply Chain - Risk hedging Supply Chain - Agile Supply Chain They can be related with the context considering the demand and supply side uncertainties, which are the two main axes of a matrix in which we should put our context in order to understand which is the best strategy for our problem (according to Lee’s model) The demand side uncertainty describes how variable is the demand, from the market, so downwards to the Supply Chain, while the supply side uncertainty looks upwards to the supply chain, from the suppliers. The matrix can be used to compare our problem to other companies, industries etc. (with relative positions, not absolute) or to compare the same company over the time, because the context can change over the time, and so the strategy has to change. Examples seen during the lectures: - Fashion industry → low SSU + high DSU → responsive SC - Consumer electronics → high both SSU and DSU → agile SC - Food industry → low both SSU and DSU → lean (effective) SC What is intermodal transportation? What are its main advantages with respect to multimodal transportation? When piggyback intermodal transportation becomes interesting with the respect to road only? The intermodal transportation is a modality of transportation which combines different main transportation modes (road, train, ship, air) handling always the same load, moving only containers…
